We spend so little time in nature it feels foreign. Though we are designed for the trees, birds, and the bees. We feel more comfortable with the couch, remotes, and laptops. Even the silence of the outdoors seems so bizarre. We can't even enjoy the birds chirping without turning on our headsets. So it comes at no surprise that we run from the outdoors. Most of us run from anything outside of our comfort-zone. But what if I told you with just a few small steps you could lead the way. You could bring your friends together for a peaceful weekend, in the serenity of God's biggest gift. You could disconnect from WiFI and timelines and reconnect to nature and peace. So what's the foundation of this blueprint you ask? What’s the path to adventure and success?
Well first familiarize yourself with the area. This means do your homework. See what animals to look out for and what fun you want to have on your organic getaway. Set a timing plan in place based on distance, terrain, and daylight. Account for the time it takes to set up and break down camp. A good rule of thumb is 2-3 hours per phase. Accurate daylight amounts can be found on the U.S. Naval observatory website. Don't forget to schedule breaks during your hiking expeditions. This can keep everyone together and in good spirits as you move forward. You would hate to hear someone complain half the way or lose the opportunity to jump into a beautiful waterfall because darkness is approaching.
Another key that goes without saying is experience. Yosemite is huge! To think you're going to just up and knock it out in just one day is super unrealistic. Try a sectional hike for starters. That means do a portion that you're comfortable with and know you can find joy and build momentum. Some would say even a single night is perfect to get your feet wet. Find a comfortable bag and break in those new hiking boots on a couple of day hikes. Simple things like snacks/water in an easily accessible place guarantee a much better experience. Having the proper attire on to prevent self inflicted injury is a must as well. Chafing is no joke. Things like trekking poles aid in joint health. Combine them with controlled paces to reduces chances of downhill injury.
These tips turned from knowledge to actions make you an instant leader in the outdoors. Start small with just a friend and yourself. In no time you will be a director of many. But always remain humble and appreciative. You're still touring another creature's forever home. Remain clean, cautious, and respectful at all times. The fun comes from integrating yourself into peace. Peace is gained through preparation and being present.
